Long before large-scale corporate Pride events became part of London life, LGBTQIA+ communities in Southwark were organising locally through grassroots campaigns, forums and newsletters.
From the mid-1990s onwards, the Southwark Anti-Homophobic Forum – later the Southwark LGBT Forum – brought together activists, councillors, police representatives and residents to challenge discrimination and improve visibility across the borough. Southwark Archives preserves posters, photographs and planning materials that document this local activism and its lasting impact.
That legacy continues today through community-led events such as Pride in Southwark, held annually in SE1, bringing together performances, local organisations and celebrations of LGBTQIA+ visibility and joy.
It is also strengthened by spaces like the London LGBTQ+ Centre in Bankside, which has become a vital community hub hosting events, wellbeing support, and social programmes.
Our very own Max + Betty Shop at the heart of Courage Yard is proudly LGBTQIA+ owned. Since opening a year ago, owners Britt and Michael have focused on supporting and uplifting the community, including fundraising for akt, a charity that supports queer homeless youth.
