This year, National Read a Book Day takes place on Friday 6th September, and we’re hiding some of our favourite books around Courage Yard!
In the run up to the day, we will be sharing some of the favourite books from local businesses on social media. On the day itself, we will then hide all of the books around Courage Yard, and encourage locals, tourists, workers and individuals alike to explore Courage Yard and find them. Inside will be personalised messages from locals- a great way to get people reading golden oldies, discover new classics and re-enter forgotten worlds, and, exploring Courage Yard! We’re going on a Book Hunt…
Our first fave read is from Ola Rodak from Starbucks Reserve.

What is the book and who is the author?

“Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How it Transformed our World” by Mark Pendergrast

What is the book about?

Uncommon Grounds is a pure coffee knowledge pill. It tells us the story from the very beginning when coffee was found on Ethiopian lands up until this day, as Uncommon Grounds and coffee teach us history where it reaches our own thoughts. The book describes every single detail and aspect that may concern coffee. It gives us insight on history, geography, vocabulary, biology, and business all together. This is what makes me go back into the story and all the facts that I may have forgotten. What is the book about?

Why is it your favourite book?

I truly believe this book has helped to develop my own passion that I love to share, not only with my friends, but also see developing it for myself. I simply find it extremely interesting as it reaches to many different subjects you may even not think about. I love returning to Uncommon Grounds to keep refreshing my knowledge and feel confident with who I am.

  • When is your best-loved time to read it?

Travelling is the most convenient time to relax and unwind with my favourite book. Rather than listening to music or watching people at airports, I refresh my knowledge and passion with Uncommon grounds.

2. Our next read is Tino Ndhlovu from Skinsmiths
  • What is the book and who is the author?

The book is called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

  • What is the book about?

The book is about understanding one’s inner self and understanding how we as humans think and feel, and what the produces in our life’s.

  • Why is it your favourite book?

It opens your mind to knew thoughts and allows you to be the master of your thoughts and feelings.

  • When is your best-loved time to read it?

Anywhere and everywhere

3. Our next book is from Wayne McNaught from the Courage Yard team
  • What is the book and who is the author?

My favourite book is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep which is written by Phillip K Dick

  • What is the book about?

If you haven’t heard of the book you have most likely heard of the films which starred Harrison Ford – Blade Runner (1 & 2). This was the first time I read a book and saw the film after and although the film missed a few points it really was what I visually imagined while reading.

  • Why is it your favourite book?

It is solidly in the Sci Fi genre but has so many elements I could relate to at an early age and which I still very much enjoy now, the book explores what it is to be human and if empathy is purely a human action.

  • When is your best-loved time to read it?

On my sofa in the evenings when everyone has gone to bed and my dog snuggles up beside me.

4. Our final book is from Chloe Gaughan from the Courage Yard marketing team
  • What is the book and who is the author?

My favourite book is Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

  • What is the book about?

Eleanor Oliphant is a modern novel that focuses on loneliness, difference and the importance of kindness through the odd, yet lovable heroine.

  • Why is it your favourite book?

Her journey of friendship brings a warmth to anyone who reads it. With such a never-seen-before character, reading Eleanor Oliphant is a roller coaster ride of emotions which has you on your toes the entire ride, a happy ride of course.

  • When is your best-loved time to read it?

On the beach!
